Tafheem-ul-Quran تفہيم القرآن Tafseer or commentary of Quran is one of the best and detail tafseer of quran in multiple languages. Tafheem-ul-Quran is written by the great Pakistani Islamist ideologue and activist Syed Abul Ala Maududi.
It means “Understanding the Quran.“
It took almost 30 years to complete the commentary (tasir). Syed Abul Ala Maududi began writing Tafhim-ul-Quran in 1942 and completed in 1972.
It consist of 6 volumes or jild. It is the modern Quran commentary on this era.
Firstly, It was written in Urdu but it was translated in many famous languages. This is because the commentary (Tafseer) read in many couturiers around the world. This Tafseer is translated in many languages like English, Arabic, Hindi, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Burmese, Malayalam.
It is the combination of orthodox and modernist interpretation and has deeply influenced modern Islamic thought. In various aspects, it varies from traditional exegesis. It features discussions and disputes on economics, sociology, history, and politics, making it more than just a typical commentary on the Quran.
In his text, Syed Abul A’la Maududi highlights Quranic perspective and argues that Islam provides ample guidance in all spheres.
Syed Abul A’la Maududi employs the usual approach of explaining Quran passages from Muhammed’s (PBUH) Sunnah, giving the historical context for the verses.
Tafhim-ul-Quran covers a wide range of topics relevant to the current world and the Muslim community in particular.
Syed Maulana Abul Ala Maududi was a great philosopher, writer, researcher of Islam. He wrote the famous and modern Quran tafseer Tafheem-ul-Quran. His publications also included a range subjects such as Quran exegesis, Hadith, jurisprudence, philosophy, and history. It were published in Urdu before being translated into English, Arabic, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Burmese, Malayalam, and other languages.
He was titled as first Amir and Imam of Jamat-e-Islami, Shaikh-al- Islam, Allamah, Sayyid, Mujaddid of 14th century. He was no doubt one of the great historian, philosopher and activist of Muslims.
He wanted to resurrect Islam and spread what he believed to be authentic in Islam. He believed that Islam was essential for politics, and that it was necessary to institute sharia and preserve Islamic culture.
Jamaat-e-Islami was formed in 1941 in Lahore, British India, by Syed Abul Ala Maududi, a Muslim theologian and socio-political philosopher who was greatly influenced by the Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb’s Sharia-based rule. He and his supporters changed their attention to politicizing Islam and gaining support for the creation of an Islamic state in Pakistan. They are considered to have aided by General Muhammad Zia-ul-Haq in introducing “Sharization” to Pakistan, and to have been considerably reinforced by him when tens of thousands of members and supporters were granted employment in the court and civil service during his presidency. Jamaat-e-Islami is the largest Islamic organisation in Asia.
In 1979, he was the first person to receive the Saudi Arabian King Faisal International Award for his contributions to Islam. Syed Abul A’la Maududi was part of establishing and running of Islamic University of Madinah, Saudi Arabia.
He was the second person in history after King Ashama ibn-Abjar to have an absentee funeral in the Kaaba.
He was died on 22 September 1979 at the age of 75 in Buffalo, New York, USA and his grave in Ichra, Lahore, Pakistan
