Tajweed – تجويد
Tajweed (تجويد) Meaning
Tajweed, also known as Tajwid or تجويد, is a phrase used frequently in the context of Quran recitation. Tajweed, in terms of Quran reading and recitation, is a collection of linguistic and phonetic standards utilized in reciting the Quran in the correct manner, as the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) did.
Tajweed is an Arabic term that signifies competency or performing something well. Its basic letters are the same as those of the word in Arabic Jayyid, which meaning good. When applied to the Quran, it indicates that when we recite the Quran, we give each letter of the Quran its own rights and dues of characteristics, and we follow the laws that apply to those letters in various situations. By studying the key qualities of each letter, we grant the letters their rights. We pay them their dues by examining the features of each letter that are present in them at times but not at others.
There was no need for people to learn Tajweed at the time of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), because they spoke in what is now known as Tajweed, therefore it came naturally to them. When Arabs began to interact with non-Arabs and Islam expanded, errors in Quranic recitation began to arise, prompting academics to write down the guidelines. Even Arabs now have to learn Tajweed since their everyday Arabic has evolved so much from the Classical Arabic in which the Quran was revealed.
The Purpose of Tajweed
The Quran is the message from Allah Almighty, and every phrase is from Him. The reciting of it must be regarded seriously. In essence, the goal of Tajweed is to improve a reciter’s ability to recite the Quran while adhering to the exact pronunciation of each letter as well as the rules and qualities that relate to it, without exaggeration or deficiency. The reciter can recite the Quran in the classical Arabic language in the manner of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), who got it from Jibreel (A.S), who received it from Allah Almighty.
Each Arabic letter has a Makhraj (an exit or articulation point from which it originates) and a Sifaat (attributes or characteristics). Tajweed requires an understanding thoroughly the both terms Makhraj and Sifaat of each letter. When two letters have extremely similar entrances, it’s simple to confuse them. As a result, if someone does not understand the real characteristics of each letter, the meaning of the words in the recitation of the Quran may be altered. When reciting the Quran, the reciter follows the norms of Tajweed to avoid making errors.
Types of Tajweed
There are three types of Tajweed which are given below:
- At-Tahqeeq: in which the Quran is read very slowly with Tajweed.
- Al-Hader: in which the Quran is read quickly with Tajweed.
- At-Tadweer: in which the Quran is read at an average rate with Tajweed.
Learning Quran Tajweed
Tajwid is a collection of principles for correctly pronouncing the letters with all of their properties and utilizing the numerous traditional techniques of recitation while reciting the Quran.
To study the Quran properly, especially if you want to learn how to recite it correctly, you must begin with the fundamental Quran Qaida, which is the cornerstone of the Holy Qruan. Along with the Qaida, learning the Tajweed, or Arabic dialect, is also highly essential. It’s just as vital to master proper pronunciation while learning any other language as it is with Arabic. The Arabic language is one of the world’s most diverse and complex languages. If spoken incorrectly, each word in this language might have an entirely different meaning. This is why everyone, including children and adults, should study the Qaida in order to better comprehend and read the Quran with ease, and to confirm that the meanings they are reciting are correct.
For individuals who have never encountered the Quran or the Arabic language in their lives, it is critical that they first learn the alphabets of the language and how to pronounce them correctly. The Qaida is the process of learning these alphabets. It should be highlighted that studying Quran is impossible without first learning Qaida, regardless of whether you are being taught by an instructor in person or online.
